What Is a Pilates Reformer?

If you haven’t heard of a Pilates reformer before, you are missing out on an incredibly popular piece of Pilates equipment. However, do not worry! Core Strong Pilates has got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about Pilates reformers!

What is a Pilates Reformer?

A Pilates reformer is a piece of equipment that has become increasingly popular within the Pilates and yoga world. It is shaped much like a bed frame with a small, flat platform, which is called the carriage. The carriage rolls back and forth within the frame, using springs to provide resistance. So that you do not slide right off of the carriage, most come with shoulder pads.

There is also an adjustable footbar, which you can use to push your body on the carriage. You can use your hands or feet to do so. Depending on how much resistance you are looking for, you can adjust the springs. You should consult with a Pilates professional before using or adjusting a Pilates reformer to ensure you are using it correctly and appropriately respective to your body weight.

How Do I Use a Pilates Reformer?

Reformer exercises can be done by lying down on the carriage, sitting, standing, pushing or pulling the footbar, and more. There are many variations of common Pilates exercises that use the reformer simply to increase resistance and thus intensify the workout. How Can I Benefit from a Pilates Reformer?

Using the reformer can help you increase your stretch length, your personal flexibility, and even your body’s balance. Pilates, in general, works to improve your core strength, your coordination, and your posture. By adding resistance to your exercises, you can see improvement in your strength. If you perform exercises effectively, you may experience relief from back pain. Beyond flexibility and balance, you can work on particular muscles using a reformer to tone up areas of your body. For example, you can target your abs or your glutes to tighten them up!
